Working through financial statements at a desk
Our approach

Listen. Prepare. Advise.

Three plain steps, repeated every year. They keep the work accurate, the deadlines met and the conversation going in between.

How we work with you.

1

ListenBefore any return is opened

Every engagement starts with a conversation about you: how the business earns, who owns it, what the family needs from it and where you want it to be in a few years. We read the prior filings and the existing books, and we ask what has frustrated you about accounting in the past.

That first meeting sets the plan. You leave knowing what we will do, what we need from you and what it will cost.

2

PrepareCareful work, reviewed before it leaves

The books are kept in cloud software that both of us can see. Reconciliations are done monthly, so year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Every return and set of statements is prepared and then reviewed before it goes anywhere. Nothing is filed until you have seen it and signed off.

3

AdviseThrough the year, not only at the deadline

With current numbers in hand, we can talk about what they mean: owner compensation, instalments, a purchase you are weighing, whether it is time to incorporate or to bring someone in. We raise these ahead of time, and you can raise anything you like in between.

If a question needs a proper meeting, we book one.

What to expect in the first 30 days.

A new client relationship follows a simple sequence. Timing depends on how quickly records arrive.

Week 1

Introductory meeting

We meet in person or by video, go through your situation and agree the scope. You receive an engagement letter and a short list of what we need.

Week 1 to 2

Access and records

We connect to your bookkeeping software, collect the records and, where useful, obtain CRA authorization so we can deal with them for you.

Week 2 to 3

Review of what exists

Prior filings, the current books and any open CRA items are reviewed. You get a plain summary of where things stand and anything that needs attention.

Week 4

Plan and calendar

We agree the filing calendar, the reporting rhythm and who does what. From here on, the work runs on schedule and you hear from us before each deadline.

Tools and communication.

Modern tools, used quietly, so that the work is accurate and you always know where things stand.

Cloud bookkeeping

Books you can see

Your accounting lives in QuickBooks Online, which you and we can both open at any time. Bank feeds and monthly reconciliations keep it current.

Documents

One place for everything

Statements, slips and signed documents are collected and kept together, so year-end does not start with a search through old emails.

Communication

Plain and direct

You can reach us by phone or email. During tax season we tell you in advance how the work is scheduled.

See how it works in practice.

A short introductory call is the easiest way to find out whether we are a fit.
